Running Landscapes: “I run. It is something I was built for. Running is deep down who I am, and ‘part of my particular union of flesh and spirit’ as George Sheehan wrote. When I run I am not escaping anything, nor am I rushing toward something new. I am in no hurry. Running suspends time and thrusts me into the landscape.
My photographs, shot on the run, capture the fleeting moments as I interact with the landscape. My (e)motion is a source of these images. As Walt Whitman wrote, ‘Nature consists not only in itself objectively, but at least just as much as its subjective reflection from the person, spirit, age, looking at it, in the midst of it, and absorbing it.’ Photography allows me to capture and share the experiences of my spirit and the expressions that nature makes while I run.” John Skwiot |
