Marcelo Suaznabar was born in Bolivia in 1970. His uncle was a professional photographer and encouraged Marcelo in his early passion for drawing. He started exploring with watercolors, pastels and colored pencils with insects, animals, houses and people as his subjects. Suaznabar’s birthplace, the city of Oruro, was founded in 1606 and has a strong folkloric tradition that inspires Marcelo’s creativity. As a teenager, he began traveling and visiting churches and museums and Marcelo became familiar with collections of colonial paintings. This led to the creation of his own acclaimed “Sacred Art” series. Marcelo sets his imagination free in his surrealistic paintings, exploring elements of the subconscious, such as death, nature, sexuality, beauty, temptation, fear and religion. Marcelo Suaznabar studied in Chile and has been invited to participate in international exhibits in Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Germany, France and the United States.
He currently lives and works in Ontario, Canada.
