Steven Stichter is drawn to older techniques hand-carved wood blocks for printmaking; manual quilting; individually set lines of lead text printed on a decidedly middle-of-the-last-century letterpress. The limits of these processes and their time-consuming natures allow the artist to slow down, to look more closely at the images around and in front of him, and to appreciate the benefits and appropriate uses of modern technologies.
Recurring themes in Stichter’s work are cityscapes, Caribbean themes, his dog Ginger, and the combination of text and images.
Steven Stichter has studied at the Corcoran and Penland School of Crafts and is co-founder of 7 hands press which produces limited-edition, handmade books in Washington, DC. His work has been exhibited in the area at Touchstone Gallery, Zenith Gallery, Warehouse Gallery, Joe’s Movement Emporium and Art-O-Matic. |
